India has been a melting pot of art and cultures. The art of Blue Pottery of India, is an ancient traditional craft. Though of Central Asian origin, it flourished in Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan (West of India) during the time of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh (1835-1880). The distinct and bold blue colour of this art is derived from cobalt oxide. Other colours used are green (derived from copper oxide), turquoise (derived from copper sulphate), brown (derived from iron oxide) and yellow (derived from calcium oxide). It is the only form of pottery that is made without the use of clay but with a mixture of quartz powder, powdered glass, fuller's earth, borax and gum.
The motifs are intricate and the process of making these magnificient artefacts are painstaking. A Geographical Indication mark (Vide GI No.540, Class 21, Certificate number 293 dated 28/12/2015) has been developed so that the identity of the craft is traced back to this specific region.
